Wild Dog Summer: A Shout-Out to Mr. Toly's Class

It’s strange to think that somewhere out there, a grade seven class in Alberta is reading my story! But thanks to technology – and this blog – we can actually connect, you in Alberta and me in Ontario.

So where shall we begin?

Maybe you have some questions about how I came to write this book. For instance, when I do classroom visits, someone always asks “Where do you get the characters’ names from?” Some readers want to know if the story is based on real events, or where I got the idea to write this story in the first place. Readers are often quite interested in the wild dogs, as well.

What do you think? Do you have any questions?

If not, I have a question for you: where are you in the novel, and what do you think is going to happen next?

I hope to hear from you soon!

  43. Jean,

I just happened to google myself to check on my own new book (Chasing Moonlight: The True Story of Field of Dreams' Doc Graham, John F. Blair, Publisher), and I happened to stumble across two sample chapters of your new upcoming work "The Toymaker's Son." Seeing my name (which is not a common one) prominently mentioned, I was wondering: Have we met before, or did you simply choose my name out of the blue? I am very flattered, even though the literary Brett appears to be the bad guy in the story, and I'll definitely buy the book. I'm just curious.

From one writer to another, keep up the good work!

The REAL Brett Friedlander (watch out for my hockey stick. I know how to use it)!

  44. The book was great, I really enjoyed this novel. I can't wait to read more about unpredictable B.J. and Craig. This was a really entertaining. When I turned to the last page I thought "What happens next?" I really can't wait to read "The Toymakers Son". I think we'll find more secrets about the accindent and meet other people that don't like Craig.

  45. I really liked the Wild Dog Summer because B.J. was a mystery and i never knew what was going to happen

When B.J grows up she will be an explorer.

  46. I thought your book was really good because it had a great and exciting climax and the end was great. I liked how you said what really happend. I will consider reading the Toy Makers Son with my friends.

I think Betty Jane will go on with her life and do more important things with her life and maybe will own a wild coydog in her lifetime.

  47. I really liked Wild Dog Summer and will definitely read "The Toymaker's Son". I liked it because it was a real page-turner and a thriller. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book, waiting to see what would happen. I think that BJ and Craig will start dating as side-characters in the next book. I'm looking foreward to reading "The Toymaker's Son". Good Luck!

  49. Have you or anybody you know ever encountered a coydog?

  50. Good question! I have seen coyotes, and heard them frequently, too. But I'm not sure I've ever seen a coydog. I believe they look very much like coyotes, so it's probably hard to tell. My only knowledge of coydogs is through reports in the news.
